On March 17th, the Central Jersey Music Educators’ Association and the New Jersey Chapter of the International Association of Jazz Educators held the Region II Jazz Band Auditions. There were several jazz band and orchestra students from Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Somerset, and Union counties. The students had to learn a solo, memorize scales, and perform a sight reading excerpt. The students were competing for an opportunity to perform with the Region II Jazz Ensemble. This is a very select group where only one drummer is accepted.
This year one South Plainfield student made this ensemble. Joshua Persad, an eighth grade student at South Plainfield Middle School made the Jazz Band on Drums. Additionally, another Middle School percussionist came in second, missing by only a couple of points. The concert for this ensemble will be at Rahway High School in Rahway, NJ on Sunday, April 13 at 3:00 pm.
