In honor of Suicide Prevention Month, the students at South Plainfield Middle School completed a “Chalk the Walk” activity! Nearly the entire student body participated in the event where they were encouraged to use chalk to write or draw a positive affirmation on the Lake Street side of the campus sidewalk. The students enjoyed being a potential “light” in someone’s dark day as well as spending a little time outside! Remember we all can use someone to talk to. If that is you, please call or text 988 to contact a counselor immediately 24 hours 7 days a week.

South Plainfield Middle School remembered the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, with a courtyard ceremony on the 23rd anniversary of that terrible day. The ceremony was enhanced by the overwhelming turnout of first responders from South Plainfield and local Veterans. The 9/11 monument in the courtyard was the center of the ceremony as students lowered the flags to half-staff and placed wreaths in front of the monument in honor of the victims and heroes lost on that day. Student Council President Jeremiah Saint Louis used the monument bell to ring out alarm code 5-5-5-5 which is used by the FDNY to announce a line of duty death. This was followed by a moment of silence, the playing of Taps by Lucia Matias and Kiarah Duncanson, and a recording of Amazing Grace performed by the FDNY Pipes and Drums. State Senator Patrick Diegnan and Town Councilman Derryk White each addressed the students and guests. The student body is to be commended for their outstanding display of respect and reverence during the entire ceremony. The following students also took part in the assembly:
Monument Flags: Matt Droge and Nick Riccardo, Luke Richkus and Mason Rizk, Joseph Currao and Mason McConville
Wreaths: Mikayla Zampella, Mark McConville, Donte Danise, Alexis Dean, Abigail Fego
National Anthem: Addison Kurzawa, Jayla May, Lianna Canarte, Danielle Richter, Santiago Matias, Blaise Bailes, Jake Butrico
